The defeat to Liverpool surely hurt Arsenal, but there are worse things for the Gunners.
No one can blame Arsenal for the way they played on Sunday afternoon at Anfield. Nor can anyone reproach them despite the 1–0 defeat to Liverpool. The Gunners fought on equal terms with the champions of England, tried to score and win the derby, but Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning goal was what ultimately made the difference.
Mikel Arteta saw his players display passion, energy, and determination on the pitch. But he also saw the injury list grow even longer. That is the real problem for the London side: the numerous and frequent injuries that are creating serious issues for the current squad, drastically reducing the Basque coach’s options.
From one injury to the next for Arsenal
Arsenal lost the battle with the Reds, but they also lost William Saliba. The French centre-back had to come off with an injury problem as early as the 5th minute of the derby. The tall defender is now adding his name to an already crowded list. He is the sixth player under Arteta to be sidelined in the past three weeks.
Before him came Saka, Havertz, Jesus, White, and Nørgaard! The London side is turning into a hospital ward. Thankfully, they had the foresight this season to build a squad with plenty of options — a full roster with players in every position. Still, this is a serious issue that needs to be solved!
